So there I was - the Woburn cinema. I sat in my truck for a moment before embarking on this solo date. As I approached the front door, the cinema looked ominous - huge! I walked on as a conqueror and gazed up at the window where King Kong, Fay Wrey, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion, looked down on me in their neon glory. The theater was quiet - good time to go to a movie. I bought my ticket and decided I wanted popcorn and nacho cheese. (I had previously found by accident that popcorn dipped in gooey orange processed cheese product is decadently good). I got in line, and then realized I was surrounded by 20-something guys and fear set in. "Great," I thought to myself, "look at that fat chick with her popcorn, cheese and huge coke...no wonder she's alone!" Then I thought, "Screw them" but still went to another line. I asked the kid at the counter for nacho cheese, and he looked at me like I was psycho. I'm used to this look of course, because these people have not discovered the greasy, gooey, crunchiness of cheesy popcorn.
So I go to the assigned theater, and I give the ticket guy my ticket. I said Hi to him cheerily, and he didn't even look at me. That pissed me off, but then I realized he was an older guy, and had a hearing aid. I probably should have yelled.
The theater was small - maybe about 150 seats. It was old-styled - not the stadium reclining seats of today. But there was some nostalgia there for me. It reminded me of the Lowes theater in somerville that we used to take the T to get to in the summer. The back row was empty, and i shimmied my way to the corner against the wall. Finally! I wasn't in a seat under a light fixture! I looked around at the people who were there and noticed - what's this - a woman alone! Rock on girl! I was feeling better already. However, this woman was in her 40's, and I silently prayed that wasn't an image of me in 10 years.
The movie started and the familiar opening music began. Shivers ran down my spine - I was almost in tears. I love this story, and I was eager to experience it again. (movie review to follow later)
